4th ODI: England v Australia at Headingley
Australia win the toss and bat

England 1 Jason Roy, 2 Alex Hales, 3 James Taylor, 4 Eoin Morgan (capt), 5 Ben Stokes, 6 Jonny Bairstow (wk), 7 Moeen Ali, 8 Adil Rashid, 9 David Willey, 10 Liam Plunkett, 11 Mark Wood

Australia 1 Aaron Finch, 2 Joe Burns, 3 Steven Smith (capt), 4 George Bailey, 5 Glenn Maxwell, 6 Mitchell Marsh, 7 Matthew Wade (wk), 8 Marcus Stoinis, 9 John Hastings, 10 James Pattinson, 11 Pat Cummins.

cricinfo:
The wicket looks quite dry," says Smith, who hopes to take England's spinners out of the equation. Stoinis is in for the spin of Ashton Agar, on account of the conditions, while John Hastings replaces Mitchell Starc.

Eoin Morgan would have batted first. He announces two changes, Steven Finn has been rested, with Mark Wood taking his place. David Willey comes in for the injured Chris Woakes. Strange to rest Finn after his pivotal role in the third match, but Morgan stresses the desire to build a pool of players who can be called upon at any time.

In 2005, England and Australia's T20 sides had Andrew Strauss and Damien Martyn batting at 7!

Not even remotely comparable.

Just THREE players (Smith, Ali and Stokes) will end up playing all of the matches between England and Australia this summer. Just three. Despite the fact the ODI series is building to an exciting finale without the big name players being involved how can the fans be expected to be excited?

In 2005, THIRTEEN players (I think) played all of the matches.

Shows how far things have changed.

If you have an Australia v England ODI match the idea is to see James Faulkner bowling to Joe Root.
Not Marcus Stoinos bowling at Johnny Bairstow.

Re: 4th ODI: England v Australia at Headingley
I would agree with that Alex
The best tours go from t20 (one game if you must) to ODI's & then build to the Tests.

No , Mr B
THEY JUST RAN OUT OF RUNS TO DEFEND

Re: 4th ODI: England v Australia at Headingley
In 2005 they got things so much better in terms of how things were organised. The ODIs were served up as a a warm up to the series, giving both teams a chance to size each other up, even if not all players transferred across hte formats.

In this series the main prize has been played for and won, and the key players are being "rested". Strange how the 2005 era players could play all summer long yet the key players (on both sides) can no longer play a full summer's cricket anymore.

Did Aus lose by any chance Sven?

Re: 4th ODI: England v Australia at Headingley
The only criticism I have of the selectors is that they should have sent over another bowler (Jason Behrendorf maybe ) so that Starc didn't play at all in this series and maybe a second so that they didn't have to call up Hastings as an injury replacement on the basis that he was a few miles down the road playing for Durham.
I might have asked for another batsman like Chris Lynn too.

Re: 4th ODI: England v Australia at Headingley
Faulkner is suspended
Johnson & Hazlewood have gone home to prepare for the Aust summer
Starc was rested as he has played every international since Aust were in the West Indies in June

That's just modern cricket these days. Australia play 2 Tests in Bangladesh & then go home for a full summer of cricket v NZ & West Indies.
This series of ODI's is a chance to look at some players and rest others for more important games.

Those 4 bowlers won Australia the World Cup.

I wouldn't be worried about those guys being missing. If i had to choose someone to bowl for my life it wouldn't be any of those four.

Who would you pick?

As a captain he needs to tell the selectors what he wants. If they don't listen, where does that put Smith......let the politics start.

Or when he looks around the field and realises he hasn't got Johnson, Starc , Faulkner or Hazlewood to call on.

It's a no brainer for me. Moeen opens against Pakistan, Taylor slots into the middle order.

As a captain, Smith isn't too accomplished when things go wrong or the pressure goes on.

Taylor is a run machine in List A cricket.

His career record puts him up there with the greatest ever!

Re: 4th ODI: England v Australia at Headingley
I am surprised Taylor hasnt been in England's ODI side more regularly. But then they did pick an odd squad for the World Cup given all the players they are using here were available.
Taylor as a Test player against short pitched bowling is something to be tested. Perhaps in S Africa?

"World champions" should read World Champions. 5 times World Champions.
Of course this team has only 3 members of that team.

Re: 4th ODI: England v Australia at Headingley
England have seen that Cummins' pace drops after 3 overs.
Have seen Hales is a T20 player only.
Have seen Bairstow > Buttler.
Have seen Morgan is the David Healy of cricket.
Have seen that James Taylor is a high class cricketer who would have 50 Test caps for any other nation by now.
Have seen that their 2nd XI can beat the "world champions".

Re: 4th ODI: England v Australia at Headingley
Obviously the biggest positive for Australia is that they have got Cummins on the field for 4 games and he has been their best bowler.
Have had a look at a few others who have been mixed at best
Have seen that Wade can bat but not keep ( I knew that)
Have seen that WA reject Stoinos isn't an international (I knew that)
Have seen that Agar's bowling is developing
Have picked a bowler (Hastings) because he was down the road rather than bring someone better to try out

It's been useful

I'm finding these sort of ODI series very hard to get too up or down about.
It's a bit Europa Cup when neither team puts out their best side.

Good chase by England
Australia ran out of bowlers
